What is subhealth?
The “Clinical Guidelines for Subhealth in Traditional Chinese Medicine,” released by the China Association of Chinese Medicine, defines subhealth as a state in which the human body lies between health and disease. Individuals in a subhealthy state do not meet the standards of full health; they exhibit symptoms such as reduced vitality and diminished functional and adaptive capacities over a certain period of time, yet these symptoms do not meet the clinical or subclinical diagnostic criteria for diseases as defined by modern medicine.
The clinical manifestations are highly diverse. On the physical level, they may include fatigue and weakness, muscle and joint aches, dizziness and headaches, palpitations and chest tightness, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, discomfort in the epigastric and abdominal regions, diarrhea or constipation, decreased sexual function, sensitivity to cold or heat, increased susceptibility to colds, and dryness of the eyes. On the psychological level, symptoms may encompass low mood, restlessness, anxiety, irritability and quick temper, fear and timidity, declining memory, difficulty concentrating, lack of energy, and slowed reaction times. In terms of social interactions, individuals may find it difficult to adequately fulfill their social roles, experience difficulties at work and in studies, struggle to maintain healthy interpersonal and family relationships, and face challenges in engaging in normal social activities.
Causes of Subhealth
The causes of subhealth are diverse, and to date, the medical community has yet to reach a definitive conclusion. In today’s increasingly fast-paced work and life environment, people are facing ever-greater psychological stress—especially young people, who experience relatively high levels of stress. Moreover, in recent years, China has seen a dramatic surge in the number of automobiles and rapid industrial development, leading to a significant deterioration in air quality. Over time, this can easily result in physical and psychological conditions that are inconsistent with the typical health status expected for one’s age group—precisely what we refer to as subhealth.
Medical research has found that most of the discomforts associated with subhealth are closely linked to long-term chronic hypoxia. In individuals in a subhealthy state, blood viscosity increases, impairing the blood's ability to carry oxygen. Overwork and unhealthy lifestyle habits lead to an increased oxygen demand by the body, while the body’s oxygen-carrying capacity falls short. Once this exceeds the body’s physiological limits, relative hypoxia gradually accumulates over time, giving rise to subhealth symptoms.
The Relationship Between Oxygen-Rich Environments and Health
In his writings, Japanese medical doctor Hideyo Noguchi stated: “The root of all diseases is hypoxia”—that is, he argued that cellular hypoxia is the underlying cause of many illnesses.
The Nobel laureate in medicine, Dr. Otto Heinrich Warburg, once stated that “hypoxia leads to cancer”: When the body’s oxygen level drops below 65% of the normal value, cells instantly undergo malignant transformation. All organs in the human body rely on oxygen metabolism; any disruption in the oxygen metabolism of even a single organ can lead to disease.
Metabolic disorders caused by hypoxia have become a well-established tenet in modern medicine.
In an oxygen-rich environment, all aspects of the human body’s physiological functions are improved, which in turn positively affects mental well-being. This also explains why the locations of China’s longevity villages are invariably in relatively oxygen-rich environments with excellent air quality.
President Xi Jinping’s clear proposition—that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”—is precisely grounded in this very principle: physical and mental health represent the greatest well-being for the people.
Mechanism of Micro-Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber in Improving Subhealth Conditions
From the perspective of “oxygen health,” subhealth—whether caused by environmental discomfort or by psychological stress resulting from changes in the pace of work and life—is essentially categorized as “hypoxia.”
The brain is a major consumer of oxygen. As the body’s most vital organ, it plays an essential role in daily activities such as work, study, and exercise by issuing crucial commands. Despite accounting for only about 2% to 3% of body weight, the brain receives roughly 15% to 20% of the heart’s total blood output. Moreover, the brain consumes approximately 20% to 25% of the body’s total oxygen intake. Yet, the brain’s oxygen reserves are sufficient for only about 10 seconds! This makes the brain extremely sensitive to oxygen deprivation. When you start noticing symptoms such as sluggish thinking, slower reactions, or difficulty concentrating, your brain has already entered a state of oxygen deficiency.
The micro-hyperbaric oxygen chamber is a scientific innovation in the modern healthcare industry. Its principle of operation lies in increasing the internal air pressure within a small, enclosed, and safe space while simultaneously introducing high-concentration oxygen from the outside (with an oxygen concentration reaching over 90%). This significantly boosts the amount of dissolved oxygen in the bloodstream, thereby improving and eliminating hypoxia in human organs—especially the brain.
As the hypoxic state improves, the body’s subhealth condition will naturally improve and disappear as well.
