A hyperbaric oxygen chamber is a specialized medical device used for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Depending on the pressurizing medium, it can be categorized into air-pressure chambers and pure-oxygen-pressure chambers. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers have a wide range of applications. Clinically, they are primarily used to treat anaerobic bacterial infections, pulmonary embolism, decompression sickness, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, traumatic brain injury, and cerebrovascular diseases, among others.
The hyperbaric oxygen chamber in a hospital is essentially a device used to treat hypoxia. Its chamber is a sealed cylindrical enclosure into which pure oxygen or pure compressed air can be introduced via pipelines and a control system. Therefore, depending on the type of gas introduced, hospital oxygen chambers can be categorized into medical-air pressurized oxygen chambers and medical-oxygen pressurized oxygen chambers. Outside the chamber, doctors can communicate with patients through observation windows and intercom systems. Large hyperbaric oxygen chambers can accommodate— 10–20 seats.

The principle behind hyperbaric oxygen therapy is quite simple. Although we can’t increase oxygen supply by boosting blood flow, we can enhance the amount of oxygen carried by the body through the use of specialized hyperbaric chambers. As a result, cells receive more oxygen, which helps prevent the decline of organ and tissue function and even promotes the restoration of their own functions. Hyperbaric chambers not only offer certain advantages in terms of oxygen delivery to tissues and organs but also have a purifying effect, making them an effective adjunctive treatment for a variety of diseases.
Hyperbaric oxygen chambers have a wide range of clinical indications, and the equipment itself is highly reliable and unlikely to malfunction. For example, if hyperbaric oxygen therapy leads to an excess of oxygen, certain side effects may occur—such as oxygen toxicity or barotrauma. Therefore, when using an oxygen chamber, be sure to follow the instructions carefully and operate strictly according to the manual. With the growing popularity of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the application and development of hyperbaric oxygen chambers in China are rapidly advancing. However, caution is required when using hardware-based hyperbaric oxygen chambers. Although the number of adverse events associated with hardware hyperbaric chambers is relatively low, these events tend to be very serious, primarily due to improper operation. Hence, we urge relevant medical institutions to strengthen training and education on safe patient use and to ensure that all staff members hold valid work permits in strict compliance with regulations.
