Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder. Epidemiological studies show that approximately 33% of people worldwide experience sleep disorders each year, and 17% suffer from severe insomnia. Individuals with insomnia often exhibit symptoms of anxiety and depression. Prolonged insomnia can easily lead to diseases in various bodily systems and may even trigger depression or impair cognitive function, seriously affecting people's physical and mental health.

Currently, the primary treatments for insomnia include cognitive behavioral therapy, pharmacological interventions, and psychotherapy; however, their efficacy is somewhat limited. Moreover, long-term use of sleep-inducing medications can lead to patient dependence and trigger iatrogenic disorders. Therefore, identifying new and effective treatment approaches has become a prominent trend in both domestic and international research.
Recent clinical studies have shown that, based on conventional treatments and supplemented by hyperbaric oxygen therapy, this approach is non-addictive, safe, and highly effective. It can significantly increase patients’ continuous sleep duration, restore disrupted sleep architecture, and markedly improve sleep quality—truly a boon for patients suffering from insomnia.
Clinical studies have shown that, in addition to conventional treatment, the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy significantly improves the overall efficacy in treating insomnia compared to conventional treatment alone. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can prolong sleep duration, improve sleep cycles, and enhance sleep quality. Foreign medical research suggests that 1–2 courses of hyperbaric oxygen therapy are most beneficial for patients with insomnia.

In 2020, a study was published on the combined treatment of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and traditional Chinese medicine for insomnia of different syndrome types. The study divided insomnia patients into four types: Phlegm-Heat Internal Disturbance Type, Yin Deficiency with Excessive Fire Type, Heart-Spleen Deficiency Type, and Heart-Liver Excessive Fire Type. Patients took corresponding traditional Chinese medicines and received 10 to 20 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as adjunctive treatment. The results showed that the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy was comparable across all four syndrome types (with total effective rates ranging from 90.5% to 100%), and was superior to the efficacy achieved when using medication alone. Studies on the combined use of acupuncture, ear acupuncture, and other therapies with hyperbaric oxygen therapy have also demonstrated that the combination significantly enhances therapeutic effects.
Hyperbaric oxygen-assisted treatment for insomnia may be associated with the following mechanisms:
Under hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the partial pressure of oxygen in the blood increases, leading to a rise in blood oxygen content. This enhances cerebral oxygen metabolism, boosts glucose utilization and adenosine triphosphate production, ensures adequate blood supply to the reticular formation and brainstem regions, improves the functions of the pituitary gland, limbic system, and cerebral cortex, restores the physiological activity of the dysregulated cerebral cortex, and thereby effectively regulates sleep-wake rhythms.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can improve myocardial ischemia and cardiac function, increase cardiac output, enhance cerebral blood flow, promote cerebral cell metabolism, facilitate the recovery of function in ischemic brain cells, and improve sleep quality.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, by enhancing vertebral artery blood flow, not only increases the partial pressure of oxygen in the ascending reticular activating system and brainstem but also alleviates the weakening of inhibitory processes in the cerebral cortex. It effectively regulates and controls the functions of subcortical autonomic nerves, thereby promoting recovery from sleep-related disorders.
Weifang Huaxin Oxygen Industry Co., Ltd. is a specialized medical device company that integrates the design, manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and service of medical hyperbaric oxygen chambers and related extended products. We provide professional, customized oxygen therapy equipment solutions and services to a wide range of medical institutions and individual patients.

Meanwhile, building on the accumulated expertise and best practices from medical hyperbaric oxygen chambers, Huaxin has developed a new generation of products—including high-altitude balance chambers, emergency rescue chambers, vehicle-mounted mobile oxygen chambers, station-based dormitory cabins, and conventional high-altitude health-preserving hyperbaric oxygen chambers. These products integrate pressurization, oxygen therapy for health care, and recreational activities into one. They feature intelligent microcomputer control, offering advantages such as aesthetic appeal, comfort, ease of operation, comprehensive functionality, and safety and environmental friendliness. By means of pressurization and diffuse oxygen inhalation, these chambers can effectively alleviate hypoxia in the human body. Moreover, under pressurized conditions, they can provide physiotherapy for cardiovascular and other related ailments, thereby helping people prevent diseases, ward off illness, maintain and restore health, practice wellness, and enhance their beauty—all of which have made them increasingly popular among sports enthusiasts.
