A hyperbaric oxygen chamber is a specialized medical device used for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Depending on the pressurizing medium used, it can be categorized into air-pressure chambers and pure-oxygen-pressure chambers. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers have a very wide range of applications; clinically, they are primarily used to treat anaerobic bacterial infections. Carbon monoxide poisoning, pulmonary embolism, decompression sickness, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular disease, and others.
A hospital hyperbaric chamber is essentially a device used to treat hypoxia. Its chamber is a sealed cylindrical structure into which pure oxygen or purified compressed air can be introduced via pipelines and a control system. Therefore, depending on the type of gas introduced, hospital oxygen chambers can be categorized into medical-air pressurized oxygen chambers and medical-oxygen pressurized oxygen chambers. Outside the chamber, doctors can communicate with patients through an observation window and an intercom system. Large hyperbaric chambers can accommodate... 10–20 seats.

The principle behind hyperbaric oxygen therapy is remarkably simple. Although we cannot increase oxygen supply by boosting blood flow, we can use a hyperbaric chamber to enhance the amount of oxygen carried in the bloodstream. As a result, cells can receive more oxygen, which helps prevent the decline in function of tissues and organs and enables them to play a role in restoring their own functions. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy not only offers certain advantages in supplying oxygen to tissues and organs but also has a cleansing effect, making it an effective adjunctive treatment for many diseases.
Hyperbaric oxygen chambers have a wide range of clinical indications, and this equipment is designed to be error-free. For example, if hyperbaric oxygen therapy results in excessive oxygen levels, certain side effects may occur—such as oxygen toxicity or barotrauma. Therefore, when using an oxygen chamber, it is crucial to strictly follow the instructions and operate in accordance with established protocols. With the growing popularity of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the application of hyperbaric oxygen chambers in China has been rapidly expanding. However, caution is still required when using these chambers. Although the number of adverse events associated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy is relatively low, these events are inherently serious and are primarily caused by improper operation. Hence, we urge relevant medical institutions to strengthen safety training and education for patients and ensure that all staff members hold valid certificates of competence as required by regulations.
